The Games We Played: Sonic Forces is an emotional rollercoaster

by Amr (@siegarettes)

[TRANSCRIPT]

Sonic Forces feels incomplete. It’s straining against its budget, with signs that it may have gone a few changes of direction. Everything is highly polished, but it’s clear that plenty got cut on the way, leaving them to assemble what’s left into something resembling complete. It’s frustrating, seeing something with so many ideas, but with almost none of them explored.

Sine Mora Ex Review

by Omar (@siegarettes)

  • Sine Mora Ex
  • Developer- Digital Extremes,  Grasshopper Manufacture, Gyroscope Games
  • Publisher- THQ Nordic
  • PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch

Sine Mora was one of the most interesting shooters of the last generation. Interesting, in the way we reserve the word for games that have peaked our attention somehow, but don’t quite manage to get all the way there. Sine Mora EX returns to it, bringing a fresh coat of paint, small balance changes, and a few 2 player modes.

  • SUPERBEAT: XONiC
  • Developer - Nurijoy
  • Publisher - PM Studios
  • PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlaySation Vita

Last night my friends and I were playing Konami’s Beatmania for the PlayStation 2. Frustrated at the amount of input lag on my television we decided to switch to another videogame. I decided to show them SUPERBEAT: XONiC. One of my friends asked how the controls work for the game, but she quickly learned how to play within seconds. Within a few hours, the Beatmania controller was left to the corner while XONiC was blasting away on the screen.

Heart & Slash Review

by Omar (@siegarettes)

  • Heart & Slash
  • Developer- AHEARTFULOFGAMES
  • Publisher- Badland Games
  • PC (Steam), PS4, Xbox One

If you know anything about me, you know that I have a soft spot for robots. Well, okay, more like a liquefied gooey center that spills out whenever I get the chance to talk about them. If the design of Heart & Slash is any indication, developer AHEARTFULOFGAMES does as well. There’s an art direction that evokes the Mega Man Legends series, clear nods to other famous robots, and a return to themes of artificial beings finding a sense of humanity that’s been popular since Pinocchio came around. The story itself centers on Heart, the titular protagonist, struggling in a post-human world against QuAsSys, a quality assurance system moving to create a world of perfect equality—by removing the unique individuals it sees as defects. Naturally, that puts Heart, with their Apple II inspired chassis and singular design, in opposition with QuAsSys, which of course means a lot of robot brawling.

Short Reviews - Need For Speed

You would think that for game developers, taking a year break from an annual activity, would mean that their product has more time dedicated for improvement. Hence why annual titles, like the Call of Duty franchise, tend to be unremarkable. Having to churn out a game every year puts you on a tight schedule, where tough decisions have to be made in order to make the release date. This was the unfortunate case with the Need for Speed series. As a result, most of the series titles were less than stellar, save for Criterion Games Need For Speed Most Wanted (2012), although that game is basically Burnout Paradise 2.

The best things about Wolfenstein have nothing to do with shooting Nazis.

image

by Omar (@siegarettes)

Spoilers for the early chapters of Wolfenstein follow. No seriously, I’ve warned you:

There’s a moment in Wolfenstein where BJ Blazkowicz struggles to get to grips with a modern coffee machine. It’s a short, humorous vignette that is interrupted by a Nazi officer questioning you. Afterward there is an abrupt and brief sex scene, which then match cuts the image of Anya’s exposed back to a scene where they plot to infiltrate a prison from a nearby hotel room. BJ narrates the scene leading up to the prison in gravelly tone that makes it feel like a movie trailer. A half hour later and you’re blowing off Nazi heads and limbs with dual-wielding shotguns.

Week ONE: We go next-gen with the Xbox One™ (the All-In-One Entertainment System by Microsoft)

image

by Omar (@siegarettes)

We here at Clickbliss have been a bit late jumping on the next-gen train. Speaking for myself, I’ve often found that new generations of hardware rarely hit their stride until at least a year into their life. Even now I don’t feel that developers have really made something that feels entirely impossible on the previous generation of hardware. With that said, due to a generous donation by Microsoft* the upcoming holidays I’ve decided to take the plunge regardless. We’ll be updating the site with some impressions of the games themselves, but for now here’s a run down of the hardware.
