I have a high tolerance for mediocre games. For longtime readers of clickbliss, that is pretty evident. But from time to time there are some games that I don’t even have words for. Games that even I can’t find anything to enjoy - even through an ironic point of view.

It is always wonderful to see a rhythm game dive into music genres that aren’t well represented. They are quite rare, but they are out there. A recent example would be Pianista: The Legendary Virtuoso where it represents classical music in a sea populated by the likes of vocaloid, J-POP, touhou remixes and eurobeat. Then there is MUSYNX. While it does fall into some of the aforementioned genres such as vocaloid, it heavily features Chinese - Mandarin vocals that aren’t traditionally featured in rhythm games.

It would be hard to mess up a game such as Bayonetta unless your name is the PlayStation 3. Plagued with frame-rate drops and longer loading times than a scratched PlayStation 2 disc, it was truly a botched release.
Ten years late, the Bayonetta name once again graces the PlayStation gaming landscape, but does it live up to the caliber set by its other platform release?

2019 was a good year for rhythm games. Sound Voltex saw its fifth iteration released, Groove Coaster made its way to the Nintendo Switch and lastly, DJMAX made a return to the PC.
I could make a pun about how Neowiz deserves some respect for porting over DJMAX Respect over to the PC, but that would just be lame. The word respect can’t be thrown around in a meaningless fashion. To achieve that title, you need to earn it as they would say.
But enough from taking quotes from a fortune cookie, how does DJMAX Respect V fare?

It has been 12 years since the release of a “proper” Ace Combat console game. Since then, Namco has experimented with the series - with varying degrees of success depending on who you ask. However, the common opinion you’ll find across is that there hasn’t been a “proper” Ace Combat game since the PS2 era.
Fans of the series have been left wondering when they will be gracing the skies of Strangereal once more. Luckily for them - including me, our prayers have been answered this year with the release of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unkown. And spoiler, it is everything that I’ve wanted.

There is that old movie cliche where your typical Americana small town is littered with dirty secrets, that are masked by beautiful scenery. Rainswept brings that tried and true trope into the gaming medium. But does it go beyond the Scooby Doo level of engagement?

It is always exciting to see a new rhythm game concept and more even more exciting to see those games available on the PC. Sonar Beat is a fresh new take on the rhythm genre, but will it rise above the rest or sink to the murky depths?

2018 was a lackluster year for me in terms of video games. Sure, there were some great releases such as Forza Horizon 4, DJMax Respect, Tokimeki Idol and Soulcalibur IV – but 2018 was alright for the most part. However, there was a game that was released this year that was more than “alright.” A game that not only captivates my imagination but also places me in a trance that I never thought I would experience from a home setting.
My game of the year for 2018 is Groove Coaster.
