My favorite ways to play GBA

The GBA is one of my all time favorite consoles. With an iconic, pocketable form factor and an expansive library of games, I’m still finding ways to enjoy it, over twenty years after its release. And with so many different options to revisit that library, it can be easy to get wrapped up in finding the “perfect” way to play it. But the truth is, so much of the handheld experience is wrapped up in the hardware you play it on, that the best option is going to be different for each person. 

So today I’m going to run through my favorite ways to play GBA, why I picked them, and what makes each great.

Odallus Review

Odallus is definitely the more ambitious of Joymasher’s two retro style games. In contrast to Oniken’s discrete levels and eclectic sci-fi aesthetic, Odallus brings a sprawling map, RPG elements, and a grotesque gothic art direction. The map branches into different paths, and each stage has several passages to take and items that open up new ones. The heavy atmosphere is delightful, but the sprawling approach overreaches and creates an uneven game.

Rad Rodgers is a throwback that doesn’t even know what it’s nostalgic for

A throwback platformer emulating games like Commander Keen and Duke Nukem, Rad Rogers follows the Rise of the Triad reboot and Bombshell as one of Interceptor Entertainment’s attempts to bring back the spirit of classic PC gaming.

For the first hour or two, I was on board for Rad Rogers. The opening was embarrassing to watch, but the platforming and gunplay had enough to them to make running around a level and collecting all the trinkets entertaining. But before the first world was even done Rad Rogers wore out its welcome.
