Disaster Report 4 is kind of boring, kind of brilliant

What kind of person would you be in a disaster? Would you take advantage of the situation for your own gain? Or would you act with kindness and help those around you? Those are the fundamental questions at the heart of Disaster Report. After a prolonged development cycle, surviving cancelation after the Japanese Tohoku earthquake, and an uncertain localization, Disaster Report 4 Summer Memories is finally here–just in time to launch in the midst of another crisis.

Treachery in Beatdown City swings wild, but with direction

After the opening cutscenes of Treachery in Beatdown City finish rolling, Lisa Santiago beats the shit out of a racist. The racist in question rudely complains about the state of the bathrooms at her home boxing gym and demands that she clean them. It should be noted that Santiago is not an employee of the gym. She’s just there to blow off some steam after hearing that third-term President Blake Orama has been kidnapped.

Langrisser I & II brings a briliant, fresh approach to the tactics genre

The tactics genre is having a small revival. With the success of Fire Emblem, the return of Advance Wars-esque strategy through Wargroove and Tiny Metal, and several smaller, but interesting games such as Children of Zodiarcs, there’s a plethora of choices to whet the appetite for the tactics hungry. So what better time to return to Langrisser, a series that’s enjoyed popularity overseas, but stayed quiet in the West?

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends Review

  • Publisher: ININ Games
  • Switch

No longer tied to the esoteric design sense of the original arcade game, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends takes the mechanics of the original and builds towards making them more transparent to new players. Bubble Bobble’s simple premise of trapping and popping enemies in bubbles is immediately clear, but the small subtleties around air flow, chaining bubble pops and using them as platforms were almost secretive thanks in the original game. Bubble Bobble 4 gives focus to these mechanics, making them more accessible and using them to build its cooperative systems.

3000th Duel Short Review

With forgettable stock fantasy enemy designs and featureless level design, you’d be forgiven for writing off 3000th Duel off first impressions. It plays with several popular tropes of modern game design, with a non-linear map structure, and a combat loop that borrows the RPG systems and corpse run format from Souls games. A Souls-like Metroidvania if you must. Despite that it doesn’t capture any of what makes those games beloved, and they even feel at odds with anything interesting about the game. 3000th Duel barely has an identity to itself.

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late(cl-r) Review

In the modern games-as-service ecosystem UNICLR is an anomaly. While its contemporaries have all moved to a constantly updating seasonal format, Under Night has instead followed the traditional format of putting out a new retail product, with the compromise of having the balance changes rolled into the previous version. In that context, UNICLR is underwhelming.

SEGA AGES makes the case for why you need another copy of Sonic 2

image

by Amr (@siegarettes)

  • SEGA AGES Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Developer: M2
  • Publisher: SEGA
  • Switch

Releasing alongside Puyo Puyo 2, Sonic 2 provides an interesting contrast within the SEGA AGES Switch lineup. Unlike Puyo Puyo 2, which has rarely been accessible outside of Japan, Sonic 2 is a game that’s been ported to nearly every generation of hardware following the Genesis, even having a separate release on the Switch as part of the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics collection. Some of these previous releases are arguably superior, such as the mobile ports which rebuild the game from scratch for modern systems, with widescreen support, higher framerates and added content.

Instead of shooting for the definitive release like Puyo Puyo 2, the AGES version of Sonic 2 positions itself as an alternative way to play the original, adding new modes and options to change how you approach the original. All the previous modes from the 3D Archives release are here, alongside the addition of 100 Ring Challenge, Super Sonic mode and the addition of Sonic Mania’s Drop Dash.
