Editor’s Note: NepZom is the term we made up to shorten the title for this game.

My inception into the Neptunia universe was bound to happen sooner or later, what I know about the series already is that; it’s about personified versions of hardware or gaming consoles, and that they’ve built a small but loyal fanbase around their jRPGs. It’s gotten to the point that I feel that at least most people into jRPG’s, or are at least somewhat invested in the jRPG scene have heard of the Neptunia series. As a new comer to the series, you could imagine my surprise when I heard they’d made an action game, with a PC version no less. There’s already a review for the game up here on clickbliss, but that happens to be the Vita version, I was tasked with the PC/Steam copy of the game – from what I gather, it’s not that different of an experience.

Superdimension Neptunia vs. SEGA Hard Girls Review

If there’s anything that the Neptunia series has become infamous for, it’s the incredible amount of repetition within the games. Art, enemies, and battles are continually reused not only within a single game, but throughout the series. What keeps people coming back, however, is a breezy script full of gags and fun interactions between the established characters, as well as the excellent localization that brings a sense of self awareness to what can often be an overindulgent mess. So it’d only follow that Neptunia would crossover with SEGA Hard Girls, a multimedia project from SEGA and Degenki magazine that uses a similar premise of making moe style girls out of game consoles, SEGA consoles specifically. Unfortunately, the series trend towards bloat takes over here, and the results are less than ideal.

We (or I for the most part) here at clickbliss are usually at the forefront of Neptunia reviews. Like Compile Heart and their videogames, we pump out our Neptunia reviews in a timely fashion. MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptunie VS Zombies (we’ll call it NepZom for short) was a game released back in the States May of 2016. Why did I take so long to publish this review? Was the game just that good that I was so immersed in the world of NepZom that I couldn’t put my opinions into words?

Having thoroughly toured the world of the JRPG, Neptune and company now venture out into the world of the arena brawler. Once again their fight takes place in Gamindustri, a world full of puns and jokes poking fun at the real world of Japanese game development. Instead of taking part in the main series Console Wars, however, this time the team is battling to show off for Dengekiko and Famitsu, two reporters based on the Japanese game magazines. The plot is a side story to the main series, removed from any stakes or events that occur there, and essentially exists to set up a reason for you to make each character brawl against hundreds of enemies.

Nep Nep is no longer held back by the power of the cell. This time we get to see Neptune and co. shine in 8 GBs of GDDR5. Compile Heart’s Neptunia series has finally landed on the 8th generation of consoles, but will it offer anything new and exciting other than a fresh coat of paint?

In the past, I’ve compared the Hyperdimension series to the days where you would bicker among your peers regarding about your favorite console of choice in the playground. This installment however would be a low budget movie. One that you would find being sold at the gas station next to the playground for dirt cheap. You know there are better films out there, but from time to time you long for some cheap frills.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation is a turn based RPG, a remake of Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 that came out in 2011. Read our original review of the game here.

I have not played this game on any other formats, or any Hyperdimension game really.. I feel like this game on PC was a bit of a drag to play. And I’m sure it’s much better to play on the Vita just for convenience sake. Having to sit through what seemed like 20 minutes of intros with text and voice overs, there were some short movies but for the most part it was just clicking X to proceed. There were certain bits in the dialogue that are quite good though.

The Hyperdimension series are slowly invading all of your favorite genres. From a traditional start with turn based RPGs, to idol management, what other genre can the series tackle on? The hack and slash genre of course.  Hyperdimension Neptunia U is Compile Heart’s take on the tried and true formula that was popularized with Koei’s Dynasty Warriors series. Except this time, you don’t have to pursue Lu Bu.
