Originally developed by DICE for the Amiga and Genesis, Ultracore was recovered and released as part of the launch of the Analgoue Mega SG, a high definition Genesis hardware clone. It remained exclusive to the system, only playable by purchasing expensive, niche hardware. Alongside a physical release from Strictly Limited, Ultracore is finally available to the wider public on Switch and PS4 as a standalone title. 

Despite picking up the Mega SG on release, I never played Ultracore, aside from the times I accidentally picked it from the home menu. My reasons were the same as why I never played the release of Super Turrican-Director’s Cut on the Super NT: I’m simply not fond of the European style platformer-shooter hybrids. But with the new Switch release, and after enjoying the PS4 release of Gunlord X, I decided to give this one another chance.

Tanzer is an energetic new Mega Drive game held back by old-school problems

A brand new Mega Drive title, Tanzer rocks an Amiga style aesthetic, calling back to games like Shadow of the Beast with its tracker style soundtrack and detailed landscapes. If I’m honest, that had me skeptical, as too often games from the Amiga school of design are easier to appreciate for their mood and artistry than for the experience of playing them. Publisher and developer Mega Cat Studios has also put out several titles for retro hardware before, which I often found similarly easier to appreciate as aesthetic exercises. But when they reached out with a chance to review Tanzer, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see what it’s like to play a new Mega Drive cartridge in 2019.

Grapple Force Rena is a charming action game that’s endlessly inventive

I know my tastes. FM synth. Grappling hooks. Momentum platformers. That’s what Grapple Force Rena’s got and what I expected to enjoy about it. What I didn’t expect was it to be so goddamn funny.

There’s none of that groan worthy videogame humor that other games use as a crutch. Rena is clear-eyed comedy–using smartly written character dialogue, situations, timing and visual gags to deliver punctuation to a scene. It’s got a wonderful cadence and playfulness to it. Honestly, I’m laughing to myself just remembering them.
