In what seems to now be a regular occurrence, Dariusburst CS has once again expanded its already massive scope to cover even more territory. While previous DLCs mostly consisted of well known titles, this one digs deep even further into the die hard SHMUP catalog, adding Battle Garegga, Terra Diver and Mahoudaisakusen characters into the mix. Luckily, it’s also one of the best releases so far.

Not content with simply remixing its parent series, Dariusburst has been consistently expanding and branching out into others with its impressive suite of DLC. While some like the Taito pack already made sense given its heritage, the SEGA and now CAVE were a little more unexpected given the format of their original games. This round of DLC includes appearances from DoDonPachi, Deathsmiles, and Ketsui. While Deathsmiles already followed a similar horizontal format, It’s a bit strange to see DoDonPachi and Ketsui running sideways. Despite that, the DLC adapts the mechanics of those games faithfully.

Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors is a game so wrapped up in the history of the series, that it’s impossible to start comprehending what it even is before taking in some of that history. The finale to the long running Darius shoot-em-up series, Chronicle Saviors is the fourth revision of the PSP entry Dariusburst. Dariusburst returns with it’s series trademarks of giant robot fish and an absolutely MASSIVE soundtrack by Taito house band ZUNTATA. Although coming off the dramatic changes introduced in Darius Gaiden and G-Darius, I was underwhelmed. Particularly missed were the opportunities to turn mid level bosses to your side, or capture enemies to use as weapons.
With that in mind, Chronicle Saviors operates as a dramatic remix of the original Dariusburst. Or rather, if the first revision was a remix, this one is a multi-disc set of remixes that has you reevaluating the original Dariusburst and puts it in line with the history of the series.
