Dariusburst AC EX Short Review

  • Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX
  • Developers - Taito, Pyramid, M2
  • Publisher - Square Enix
  • Switch, PS4

Coming from the gluttonous feast that was Chronicle Saviors, Another Chronicle EX is like showing up to a banquet and only being served an appetizer. Chronicle Saviors, the previous port, sported both a port of the ultrawide arcade game as well the titular CS mode, with a brand new campaign formatted for 16:9 widescreen, new songs, and an upgrade system, as well as extensive DLC support with shooter crossovers from other companies.

Another Chronicle EX is more or less a straight, no frills port of the arcade game, with the previously missing event mode restored, and the new ship from Chronicle Saviors added. None of the M2 gadgets have been added, and no concessions have been made for the 16:9 presentation, save a not so useful zoom function.

At almost the same price as Chronicle Saviors, Another Chronicle is charging full admission to eat another party’s leftovers.

In what seems to now be a regular occurrence, Dariusburst CS has once again expanded its already massive scope to cover even more territory. While previous DLCs mostly consisted of well known titles, this one digs deep even further into the die hard SHMUP catalog, adding Battle Garegga, Terra Diver and Mahoudaisakusen characters into the mix. Luckily, it’s also one of the best releases so far.

Dariusburst CS always presented itself as a celebration. A final hurrah to a storied, bizarre series of arcade titles. So it seems appropriate that they’ve followed that up with a series of new playable ships based on other Taito arcade games. What I didn’t expect was the games that they’d choose to bring in.

Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours Review: Taito brings Darius to its series termination.

Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors is a game so wrapped up in the history of the series, that it’s impossible to start comprehending what it even is before taking in some of that history. The finale to the long running Darius shoot-em-up series, Chronicle Saviors is the fourth revision of the PSP entry Dariusburst. Dariusburst returns with it’s series trademarks of giant robot fish and an absolutely MASSIVE soundtrack by Taito house band ZUNTATA. Although coming off the dramatic changes introduced in Darius Gaiden and G-Darius, I was underwhelmed. Particularly missed were the opportunities to turn mid level bosses to your side, or capture enemies to use as weapons.

With that in mind, Chronicle Saviors operates as a dramatic remix of the original Dariusburst. Or rather, if the first revision was a remix, this one is a multi-disc set of remixes that has you reevaluating the original Dariusburst and puts it in line with the history of the series.
