Keeping in the spirit of the previous article published by another clickbliss staffer. Here lay a list of my all time favorite albums. These are in my opinion the most “complete” albums that whoever artist they are from. These are in no particular order either. Also there are a lot more albums I could’ve chosen or put on this list but I decided to choose a few that will best showcase my taste.
1. There Is Nothing Left To Lose - Foo Fighters
I first heard the Foo Fighters when I was about 12 years old and since then I still consider them as one of my favorite bands and one of the “rock” songwriters out there now. What really makes this my favorite album is that this album in itself is everything the Foo Fighters is and can be. Foo Fighters is generally known as more of a hard rock kind of band but with this album they simplified everything, they played ballads (of sorts), sadder, slower and more personal songs. It was recorded in a house in Virginia which they bought to get away from everything and all the vocals were recorded sitting down, which is generally never done which just adds more mystery and allure to the album.
2. rkives - Rilo Kiley
Though technically a compilation album, it’s made up of selected unreleased material and B-sides from throughout their career. I absolutely love Rilo Kiley and everything the goddess that is Jenny Lewis is in. And my God is this album great, this album though it was just the “leftovers” from their previous albums have some of their greatest stuff. Let Me Back In, It’ll Get You There, Well You Left which sounds like a Gibbard or Oberst track, I Remember You, and so much more. All could’ve been hit songs.
3. Wincing the Night Away - The Shins
Boy do I love The Shins, this album particularly has some of my favorite songs from them. Australia, Phantom Limb, Turn On Me, Sleeping Lessons and A Comet Appears. All great songs, and so is the rest of the album. This is arguably the best album they have made, and in my opinion IS the best.
4. Disraeli Gears - Cream
Yep. Who can argue about this albums place in “top” list? First time I heard this I was inspired to pick up my guitar and just learn every damn song in this album, which of course I couldn’t do as a 13 yr. old boy and still can’t today, though I did get some songs down. I can’t really pick and choose which songs I love the most from this album, it’s just one of those that every song in it are just fantastic. I mean, Tales of Brave Ulysses, when have you heard a more wah infused psychedelic tune. It’s the combination of those three musical geniuses, that makes this band the one of the greatest bands of all time, and arguably the best trio only rivaled by Rush.
5. Lullabies to Paralyze - Queens of the Stone Age
I honestly wouldn’t say that this is their “best album” but it is the one that I can relate to the most and just listen to the most, this album just has those songs. And I love this band, boy do I. They are just some of the last consistent keepers of the flame when it comes to hard rock, stoner rock or desert rock. The songs Medication, Little Sister, Burn the Witch, In My Head, I Never Came, and Long Slow Goodbye are just some of their best works, and there are so much more great songs and album that this band produces. Part of this is their collaborative process. Each member has great ideas, and they often switch instruments around to make different songs.
6. Damn the Torpedoes - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
It doesn’t get more American than this, it really doesn’t, this literally is the sound of American Rock N’ Roll or Heartland Rock more specifically. No matter what you call it, I call it Tom Petty. Tom Petty, one of the greatest songwriters in pop music history, period. This guy fronted the Heartbreakers right into history. These guys were seminal in their time, they’ve made a shitload of hits and songs that will always be relevant. Their Music stands the test of time. To paint a picture of how great they are… Tom Petty was in The Traveling WIlburys. A supergroup consisting of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. They were the most talented supergroup ever to have been formed. Now back to Damn the Torpedoes I am lost for words this is an album where all the instruments just come together to form a masterpiece, and this is nothing less.
