What pops up to mind when you hear “VIIR?” You might think, “oh, it could be the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake.” But surprise! It isn’t. It’s actually Megadimension Neptunia VIIR – but this time you get to be with your console goddess up close and personal, but would you want to?

The original Megadimension Neptunia VII was the first mainline entry of the series for this generation of consoles and it was a decent game. There was nothing generally offensive about it. It was a Neptunia game through and through - take that as you will.

Since then, gameplay technology has evolved. While VR back then was a reality, it wasn’t yet mainstream. Now with the technology becoming relatively mainstream, you can’t fault Compile Heart for cashing in the VR buzz.

Like with every Neptunia before it, it introduces you to this new tech the Nep Nep way – being self-aware. You find yourself in a bland looking room and out of nowhere you are greeted by everyone’s favorite purpled hair heroine. This small little locale is where you will be doing most of your VR experience in. You can talk to other characters, decorate your room, among other things.

That’s pretty much it.

Everything else in the game is the same – apart from some minor battle system adjustments. Everyone out in the field now carries some weight in battle. While in previous games you can mash your way to victory without little thought, this game requires to make you think for a tad bit. The game is still pretty easy and if done right, you could still mash your way to victory.

The storyline remains as cheeky and humorous as ever. Idea Factory’s localization team remains to be one of the best in the industry.

It’s hard to say anything more about VIIR. I may sound like a broken record, but it’s still a Neptunia game through and through but with this time you can use an eye-gouging equipment. There’s nothing new, nothing special.

Editor’s Note: This was reviewed on PC via Steam. Early on in the game, there was a game-breaking bug where if you load up a save, the game would automatically crash. The game has since been patched to remedy the issue as of 12.08.2018
