Sometimes you should take a break from the usual breakfast you have. While drowning Frosted Flakes with a glass of Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Milk is bliss, you can’t have that all the time. It’s good to have something like eggs or bacon for once. It’s the same deal with rhythm games. We all love to listen to J-Core all day every day, but your ears need something else from time to time. Pianista is that different tune we need. Instead of the tunes of DJ Groovy Hoshii, it is time for Claude Debussy to take center stage. But is it worth your time?

Note this is the mobile version review of Pianista, the Nintendo Switch version will come at a later date.

Pianista is another lane-based rhythm game where you hit the corresponding notes as they fall through the screen. Sometimes, you have to hold your find and slide across the screen depending on the note presented to you. It tries its best to mimic actual movements you might do while playing a piano. For some songs, there is a steep rise in difficulty especially once it starts to get to the climax, however, it really wasn’t detrimental - if you’ve played other touch-based rhythm game you should be fine.

However, the main focus of this game is its music. You won’t find any of your usual electronic or idol flare here, it’s all about the classics - and not the one your father keeps yapping about. You will be greeted by everything from Beethoven to Haydn. The songs cannot be chosen in order and will be thrown at you at random.

But just with like any modern rhythm music game out on mobile devices, you will be limited to how many songs you play. For example, if you’ve played any of THE iDOLM@STER mobile rhythm games (not counting SHINY FESTA), you are limited to however much stamina you have and would have to wait for that to replenish. Pianista has the same concept. Should you want to play them as much as you desire, you will have to buy them outright. If opening your wallet isn’t something you want to do, then you can grind your way to earn enough coins to buy a song.

Pianista is a refreshing rhythm game in terms of music. However be prepared to encounter typical mobile IAPs.
