There are things in life that you indulge in ad nauseam. Your favorite soup from a relative, video games such as Football Manager, or whatever iteration of the hip new shootabang that is out in the market. This could also be applied to the music you listen to. GARNiDELiA’s G.R.N.D is exactly that, and it is starting to wear out a bit.
Ask any GARNiDELiA fan and they will say that their sound has been consistent in the past few years. Some are tired of it, and others are starting to revile it. For those who revile it, G.R.N.D is the last two to three years of the group repackaged into a new album.
In fact, the opening song “G.R.N.D” can be interpreted into Maria telling you “keep listening to our stuff because you will.” Mainly because of lyrics such as “G na music ni motto yudanete,” (Indulge yourself to more GARNiDELiA music) and “Nobody could stop me.”
That sort of arrogance is quite refreshing, at least she is honest.
The album drops in flavor with “Speed Star,” as it sounds like your typical anime soundtrack that you’ve grown used to. Then the album rises to the top with the following two songs, “Hysteric Bullet,” and “Poppin’ Trip,” which are probably the best songs in this whole album. “Hysteric Bullet” is chef’s kiss and “Poppin’ Trip” makes you feel – excuse the Twitter-esque language – HYPE AF FAMPAI with its heavy EDM and Dubstep beats. This is something relatively new for the group and I personally would like to see more of that in the future from them. Plus, Maria’s vocals really shine with those two songs alongside others like “Jesus,” and “Love Swing.” The latter song mentioned with “After Glow” is also a bit new in style for the group as it implements Jazz which was refreshing to hear.
The rest of the albums are things you’ve heard of before.
The album is like your favorite soup you grew up with, this time with some meat chunks you haven’t had before. However the familiar taste of the broth outweighs the new taste of the meat leaving you to yearn for something a little more different.
