Ignore the clickbait title - or not, I mean this site is called clickbliss after all. A few weeks ago I posted up an editorial stating that the Switch wasn’t doing it for me - yet. However, the folks over at Namco has decided to #bless us with Taiko no Tatsujin for the Nintendo Switch.
And that changes everything for me.
I remember during the Nintendo Switch announcement Yoshiaki Koizumi was touting the features of the joy-con, specifically the HD Rumble. This was supposed to be as revolutionary as the rumble pack from the Nintendo 64 days. Koizumi used a cup of ice to show his point. He stated that “It feels like something is shaking in a glass.” This new form of haptic feedback is supposedly going to change how we feel our games.
Now, apart from 1-2-Switch and Tumbleseed I don’t know of any title that uses HD Rumble to its full ability.
But here comes Taiko.
During the March 9th Nintendo Direct the game was finally announced for the Switch. During the presentation, they showed that you could your joy-cons as drumsticks. A forward flick would be akin to hitting the face of the drum, while a sideways flick would be hitting the rim.
This is revolutionary, you hear, revolutionary!
If the folks at Namco can implement HD Rumble perfectly with this it would be a pure immersive experience. There wouldn’t need a drum controller when you have the drum already on your hands - something already available for you right out of the gate.
And that is a gimmick worth praising and waiting for.
