The Games We Played: Nier Automata.

Nier Automata is something special. It’s one of those games I have trouble finding words for without cheapening it. 

I could go on about how its synthesis of brawler combat and shooter elements feels like it was made for me. Or its examination of humanity through artificial life.

Or I could yell about the way it uses metatextual elements in key scenes to accentuate its emotional and draw attention to its construction, violating all the tenets of what prescriptive game design philosophy tells us is valuable.
