Somewhere out there – perhaps on twitter I may have tweeted something lamenting on the trend of pixel games. I probably said something along the lines of, “those games are nothing but bleep bloop nonsense.”  I’m also a raging hypocrite however as I’ve enjoyed quite a bit of those “bleep bloop” games. Pixel Cup Soccer 17 is one of them.

As of the writing of this review, the game is still in Early Access, so my thoughts and opinion might change, but as of right now the game is wonderful as it is.

Pixel Cup Soccer is a throwback back to the days of sports games during the Super Nintendo era. It’s similar to NHL’94 where the simplicity of the game makes it king.  You only need a controller and know the bare basics of the sport. That’s pretty much it, no really that’s it. You move the players around the pitch, make the necessary tackles and aim for the net (or block the opposing shots).  It is pure arcade gameplay that anyone can easily pick up and play. The laws of soccer don’t apply to this game so feel free to act like Sergio Ramos and tackle as much as you want, you won’t be carded for your valiant efforts out on the pitch.

While the game is still in Early Access, there are a variety of modes, teams and competitions to choose from.

In competition mode, you can choose from seven (as of this review) to play from ranging from faux leagues such as the Pixel League to the World Cup.

Teams in the game include Tiki Taka FC, which is based on FC Barcelona to Hipster FC which might be a jab at those who still think that this sport is targeted towards hipsters (well at least in the United States).

The game isn’t without faults thought. You can’t change the formations and while the pixel art is cute and all, all of them are same faced sans their hair and skin color. You also can’t make your own team, so have fun with Hurricane FC to your disposal.

Overall, this game is pretty cute and fun for being some bleep bloop.
