Duke Nukem 3D does a lot of things right, It’s relatively simple, yet relatively complex, It’s brash, it’s crude, its loud and it’s proud but most importantly it’s a ‘whole lotta fun’.
The story of Duke Nukem 3D is simple, aliens have taken over earth and Duke is the only one who can save humanity. So you go on level by level, killing the big boss. The series however has been influential popularizing the genre of first-person shooters.

The game is very interactive, you can usually break things like boxes and so on to get ammo or health. And one of the great gems about the game is the secrets that usually lead to weapons, special items or health and armor. Finding these bonuses will always rely on interactions with the surroundings and objects. On the first mission alone there are eight secrets and finding there are fun little things on their own. You could certainly skip them and just play the game straight but you wouldn’t get the weapons and items as quick as you would if you had found the secrets.

It is not a serious as most other first-person shooters and that’s a good thing. The colorful, relatively easy going nature of the game is a positive the open world nature is very apparent, there are a lot of corridors and doors, if there aren’t any pixelated bad guys there there’s usually health or ammo or something there.
Having spent some time with the game I can appreciate it, I can say that I actually enjoyed it. I’m not usually one to play FPS’ but this game was also a puzzle. Finding the secret bonus areas, and finding out what things you can interact with like light switches or toilets – which gives you a little boost in health. The game begs to be played, it wants to be figured out and finished. All in all Duke Nukem 3d is a game worth playing.

The Megaton edition was first released on Steam in 2013 and was recently ported and released for the PS3 and PS Vita on January 6, 2015. The Edition combines the original game plus the Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, and also added three new expansion packs Duke Caribbean: Life’s a Beach, Duke It Out In D.C., and Duke: Nuclear Winter.
