...Like Clockwork (Queens Of The Stone Age) Overview

By Kevin (@prufesuroak)

Listening to …Like Clockwork by Queens of The Stone Age is like suddenly being dropped into an alternate universe, a universe in where everybody is wearing black, hunched over, a world where everyone’s got long nails and sharp crooked teeth.

It’s what you’d expect to hear if you’re a “Qotsa” fan, but with a lot more diversity. It’s got their darker tones, the poppy ones and even a ballad or two.

The album starts out strong with “Keep Your Eyes Peeled”, a sluggish, slithering track with deep distorted bass tones,  fat menacing guitar riffage and an entrancing slide guitar/piano (or whatever it is) playing along.

“I Sat By The Ocean”, is perhaps Qotsas catchiest song to date. An upbeat number incorporating the trademark guitar tone and vocals by Homme and each of the band members own tonal frequency perfectly stacking up into this beautiful song.

“The Vampyre Of Time And Memory”, is something new that we haven’t really heard from the band. The song starts out primarily just with piano and vocals, a beautiful blend of music and lyrics mind you. The song does start to develop into something more when the rest of the instruments come in and the vocals are joined in by another voice.

“If I Had A Tail” is a good “robot rock” song as Josh Homme once used to describe their music. “My God Is The Sun”, the first single is nothing short of an great Qotsa song. It starts out with this simple yet menacing riff and then pulls back and sluggishly pulls itself towards the chorus.

The album as a whole in my opinion is almost complete and has more good songs, that there is filler. Qotsa keeps evolving and growing into a more melodic and fine tuned band with every release and this one is they’re best one yet. If I was stuck in an island with just one Qotsa record it would be ...Like Clockwork.
